Tulare ( tuu-LAIR-ee) is a city in Tulare County, California. The population was 59,278 at the 2010 census. The name Tulare comes from the Tule River Indian Tribe of the Tule River Reservation, a federally recognized Native American Tribe. Tule River Reservation is the name of the reservation, inhabited by the Yokut tribe. The city was named and created by the railroad. The railroad wanted to charge the town of Visalia to go through there. The town was young and couldn't afford the enormous fee the railroad wanted to charge. So the railroad went a few miles south and created the City of Tulare. This angered Visalians and there were several skirmishes between the two towns. Visalians even tried burning the City of Tulare to stop its creation. They feared the creation of Tulare and the railroad bypassing Visalia would lead to the death of Visalia. To stop the destruction the railroad agreed to put the county seat in Visalia. So the Tulare County Courthouse was built in the City of Visalia. Tulare is located in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley, eight miles south of Visalia and sixty miles north of Bakersfield. The city is named for the Tulare Lake, once the largest freshwater lake west of the Great Lakes. The Stockton seaport is 170 miles (270 km) away, and the Sacramento port is 207 miles (333 km) away. The Los Angeles and San Francisco ports are each approximately 200 miles (320 km) away, making Tulare a hub or central location for product movement.
